60 Million Nigerians Illiterate –Literacy Commission

The Executive Secretary, National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education, Alhaji Abba Haladu, says about 60 million Nigerians are illiterate.

He said this at the 2017 International Literacy Day Celebration held at Yewa College, Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

He said the situation called for an urgent attention as the country strives to ensure the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Haladu said out of the figure, the female population accounted for nearly 60 per cent, while about 1.3 million children were out of school.

Haladu, who was represented by Mrs. Aderonke Oyetunji, also observed that this year’s theme: “Literacy in a digital world,” was apt as the country was moving towards the realisation of the potential of digital technologies for the promotion of literacy.

He said, “Rapid transformation in the digital technologies has taken place in the world in the past few years as a result of which Nigeria is now a part of a globalised world.

“This has affected all aspects of our social, economic, cultural and political lives.”
