Mechanic in court for stealing customer’s buses




AN auto mechanic, Segun Moses, has been arraigned before an Oredo Magistrate’s in Benin for allegedly stealing two buses belonging to a customer in Oredo Local Government Area of the state.

The suspect, who was arraigned on a two-count charge of stealing, was accused of also stealing the sum of N70,000, said to belong to the customer, one Reverend Okotie Joshua.

The prosecutor, Mr. Sunday Omor, told the court that the complainant had sought the service of the accused to repair the vehicles and allegedly paid the sum of N70,000 to the suspect as the cost of the repair.

He said the offence was committed on January 31, 2014 at Ekenwan Road, off Ugbiyoko, in the state capital.

Omor said Moses sold the vehicles after dismantling them.

The charges read, “That you, Segun Moses, of Ekenwan road, off Ugbiyoko, Benin City, on January 31, 2014, at Urubi in Oredo Magisterial District, did steal two buses, property of one Rev. Okotie Joshua, valued N1,700,000, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 383 (1), (2) (a) and punishable under Section 390 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 48 Vol. II Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976 applicable in Edo State.

“That you , Segun Moses of Ekenwan road, off Ugbiyoko, Benin City, on January 31, 2014, at Urubi in Oredo Magisterial District, did steal the sum of N70,000, property of one Rev. Okotie Joshua, valued N1,700,000, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 390 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 48 Vol. II Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976 applicable in Edo State.”

The suspect, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The presiding magistrate, Mrs C. A. Nwoha, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 and a surety in like sum, who must be a house owner and swear to an affidavit.

The case was later adjourned till October 19, 2015, for hearing.
