Egypt’s Sisi visits troops in North Sinai after attacks

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on Saturday visited
North Sinai to inspect troops following a series of deadly
attacks on military checkpoints, state-run news agency
MENA reported.

Presidential spokesman Alaa Youssef said that Sisi wore a
military uniform during his visit to show solidarity with the
Armed Forces.

Sisi stressed that the Egyptian army was doing a great job
and that history would remember its role in protecting the

He also saluted military officers for their sacrifices for the
sake of the Egyptian people.

A wave of terrorist attacks hit Sinai Peninsula on
Wednesday. According to an Armed Forces statement, the
attacks left 100 extremists and 17 soldiers dead.

Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, which pledged allegiance to Islamic
State (IS) group, claimed responsibility for these attacks.

Since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi by
the army in 2013, North Sinai witnessed escalated attacks
launched by extremists, leading to hundreds of deaths.

The Egyptian Armed Forces then launched large-scale
operations to crack down on extremists in the region.
