Fernando Torres determined to prove his staying power at Chelsea and resist moves to sell him to Inter Milan

Fernando Torres is
ready to stay at Chelsea
next season and resist any
attempts by the club to sell him
after turning down the chance to
join Inter Milan.
The 30-year-old Spain striker, who
was named on Saturday in his
country’s final World Cup squad of
23, was criticised by manager Jose
Mourinho last season in the
aftermath of the Champions League
quarter-final against Paris Saint-
But Torres, who signed a five-and-
a-half year contract when he
moved in a spectacular £50million
transfer from Liverpool in January
2011, will resist any efforts by
Chelsea to move him on, even
though the club will be bringing in
£35m Diego Costa from Atletico
Madrid and another striker,
possibly Mario Mandzukic of Bayern
Torres' inclusion at world football’s
showpiece tournament comes
despite him having been dropped
by Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque
earlier this year.
With Costa nursing a hamstring
injury, Torres may even start for
the world champions when they
open their campaign against
Holland on June 13 after scoring
for Spain in the 2-0 win over
Bolivia on Friday.
Torres scored 11 goals last season
in 41 appearances for Chelsea,
though 18 were from the bench.
He was singled out by Mourinho,
who started with midfielder Andre
Schurrle up front at Paris Saint-
Germain, the manager saying: ‘I’m
not happy with my strikers’
performances, so I have to try
